“One Small Mistake Can End Your Run” Dying Light: The Beast Director Breaks Down Its Brutal New Mode
Dying Light: The Beast is pushing survival further than ever with its new Restored Land experience, a mode where every decision carries weight. Zombies don’t respawn. Resources are finite. And in the new One Life mode, death means starting over completely.
To understand just how this new update works, we spoke with Game Director Nathan Lemaire, who offered insight into the update and what players should really expect.
“Small Mistakes Can End the Run”
When asked what most often leads to failure, Lemaire pointed to something surprisingly simple: overconfidence. Dark Zones, in particular, are a major threat.
Most of my deaths actually came from moments where I made a small mistake and thought, ‘I need to move away.’ It looks small, but it can end the run totally.

A More Grounded, Survival-Focused Experience
Compared to the base game, One Life mode shifts the entire tone of the experience. According to Lemaire, the goal was to create something more controlled and survival-driven. Loot is scarcer across the board. Food is harder to come by. Shops carry less inventory. Every system has been tuned to slow players down and force more deliberate decision-making.
You need to be careful in how you approach any situation, It’s much more geared towards survival.

If Zombies Don’t Respawn… What Happens to the World?
One of the biggest questions surrounding the mode is what happens when enemies stop coming back. Lemaire reveals that each region features a threat level system that tracks your progress. As players clear out infected, areas move from high danger to fully restored. But instead of becoming empty, the world evolves.
Survivors from nearby hubs come back. You can see them on balconies, cooking, camping, fishing.
The Real Test Starts at Night
For players jumping in, Lemaire highlights the first night as a key moment players should be careful of.
“It’s a change of pace, and if you don’t adapt quickly, it might not go well for you.”
Night has always been a defining element of Dying Light, but this update takes it to the next level. Survival depends on how quickly players can adjust to the increased danger and pressure.

Preparation Is Everything
Long-term planning plays a huge role. Boss encounters, in particular, can catch players off guard with their aggression. “They can surprise you” Lemaire warns.
You need to come prepared with medkits and everything you need to maximize your impact.
