Assassin’s Creed Cooperative Spin Off Reportedly Cancelled
Reports indicate that Ubisoft was developing a cooperative online game internally known as Assassin’s Creed League. The idea began as downloadable content for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, a single player stealth action game set in feudal Japan. As development progressed, the scope reportedly expanded beyond additional missions, eventually turning into a standalone multiplayer experience. The project was being handled by Ubisoft Annecy, a studio previously involved in multiplayer systems for the franchise.
What the Game Was Meant to Be
Assassin’s Creed League was designed as an online cooperative experience supporting up to four players. Each player would take control of an assassin, working together on shared objectives and missions. The project was part of Ubisoft’s wider effort to reintroduce multiplayer elements to the series after several years of focusing almost exclusively on single player entries. Internal plans reportedly included an invite only alpha test scheduled for mid 2026, suggesting the game was well into development.

Why the Project Was Cancelled
According to sources familiar with the project, Ubisoft cancelled League relatively late in development. One key reason cited was the length of development time and concerns about whether the project still made sense as part of Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ long term support. The cancellation also aligns with broader cost cutting and restructuring efforts at Ubisoft, which has recently cancelled multiple unannounced projects and reassessed several ongoing ones. Developers working on League were reportedly informed close to the time the cancellation became public.
What Happens Next
Although the game itself will not be released, some of the work done on League may not be lost entirely. Reports suggest that a smaller team is now focusing on integrating parts of the multiplayer technology into Ubisoft’s core Anvil engine. This could allow cooperative or multiplayer features to appear more easily in future Assassin’s Creed titles without the need for a fully separate project.

Ubisoft’s Bigger Picture
The cancellation of Assassin’s Creed League fits into a larger pattern of change within Ubisoft. The publisher has been restructuring how its major franchises are developed and managed, while also reducing costs across the company. Several other games have been cancelled or delayed during this period, indicating a more cautious approach to large scale or experimental projects. In that context, League appears to be another casualty of shifting priorities rather than a reflection of player interest in cooperative Assassin’s Creed experiences.
